We arrived at our next hotel – The Blue Keys in Southampton – seen above in its small town, old pub, renovated glory – thanks to Steve our taxi driver in London who took extra care in getting us to the Waterloo train station. We were convinced that the company we booked transport on to get to SH – “Megabus” – was going to actually be a bus. Steve was not at all convinced and asked us a lot of questions. We showed him the reservation form, tried to find an address and worked hard to really think through where there might be a bus stop at the train station. He was so nice!
He wanted to be sure we did not have to drag the bags and I think he was a little concerned in general that we did not know what we were doing – not at all in a condescending way…On this taxi-to-train trip he shared (apologised) that his thoughts were preoccupied with a pending property purchase – we got a bit of his back story too – it is lovely when people offer a bit of their life in such a short time…
Once we got to the station, Steve let me pop out then proceeded to loop back around (with Margaret and our luggage!) while I ran in to make sure we were in the right place. Turns out Megabus is a Megatrain and we were exactly where we needed to be. Instead of just dropping us anywhere, Steve took us around the back and to the upper level where the trains leave – to save us from having to drag our bags any further than needed. Kind, kind, kind.
At the last moment, after unloading and paying him, he asked if we had any loose, small coins. I was so dazed that all I could do was look at him with a head tilt so I think he felt sad for us and handed me a 1 pound coin. He leaned toward me and said quietly, “For the toilet” and gave me an encouraging nod to send us on our way.
We made more friends along the way to our day’s destination – then some bag dragging up a flight of stairs (with help!) walking, laundry, recycling conversation with frame shop owner, coffee, walking, dinner – all is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Did a Steve help you today? Are you a Steve?
